Amazon to open first NSW fulfilment centre in Sydney’s Moorebank

Amazon has signed a lease for its second Australian fulfilment centre in the south-west Sydney suburb of Moorebank, with plans to start operations there in the second half of 2018.

The 43,000-square-metre facility is in Centenary Distribution Centre, at 7-21 Centenary Avenue, which is owned and managed by Australia’s largest industrial property developer Goodman.

Amazon Australia operations director Robert Bruce said the new Moorebank facility would add to the capabilities of their first 24,000-square-metre warehouse in Melbourne’s Dandenong South, which opened in December 2017. The new centre would allow them to handle future customer demand and speed up delivery to customers across the country.

“Sydney represents another important development for our growth strategy in Australia, following a steady and progressive increase in customer demand,” Mr Bruce said.

“This investment will benefit both customers and the local economy by generating new jobs and providing small and medium-sized Australian businesses who sell on Amazon.com.au and use our Fulfilment by Amazon program, with an opportunity to more easily access millions of customers across the country.”

The lease was negotiated by CBRE, which declined to comment on the deal.

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller called it “a great win for our local community”.

“The Amazon facility will be a boon for south-west Sydney and we look forward to having good jobs for people close to where they live and having a partner involved in the local community,” she said.

“We expect the Sydney fulfilment centre will become a key logistics hub thanks to its strategic position in south-west Sydney.”

The announcement comes hot on the heels of the Australian roll-out of the Fulfilment by Amazon service that allows businesses to access Amazon’s logistics capabilities, including packing, shipping, customer service and returns.

Amazon Prime, a paid subscription service that provides free two-day delivery and music and video streaming, will be coming to Australian customers in mid-2018.

The e-commerce giant employs more than 1200 people in Australia and will begin hiring positions for operations, support and technical specialists for the new warehouse.
