Could these buildings restore your faith in bricks and mortar?

If your new year’s resolution was to get back in touch with your spiritual side, or maybe just to own a building with really pointy roof, these once-holy sites are for you. All of them are available to buy right now.

1. Milton, NSW 

This church in Milton is being offered with an accompanying house on a massive 4047-square-metre block in the charming south coast town of Milton.

The Uniting Church is up for sale for the first time in its 145-year history. According to listing agent Chris Coffey, the Gothic Revival sandstone building was built by local stonemasons in 1872. In order for the church to be converted to a residence or business operation, the new owner would need to lodge an application to change the current zoning.

The listing includes a manse (minister’s residence) with four bedrooms, a flexible floorplan and extras including hardwood floors, pressed-metal ceilings, fireplaces and period details, with views to the surrounding countryside.

The church features a soaring ceiling, lead-light windows and original arched timber doors.

Mr Coffey, of One Agency, is quoting a price guide of $1.45 million.

 2. Auchenflower, Brisbane

Built in the 1920s, this former Anglican church now forms part of a massive development site in the popular Brisbane suburb of Auchenflower. According to listing agency Savills, the site contains three buildings; a church, a hall and a rectory.

Owned by the corporation of the Synod of the Diocese of Brisbane, Savills is inviting applications for purchase, lease or co-development, with the site being zoned CR2 character infill, allowing residential development, subject to approval.

3. Carlton, Melbourne

This tiny little chapel in Melbourne’s buzzing Carlton has previously been used as an art gallery, but is suited to a variety of uses under its current mixed-use zoning.

The property has been completely refurbished and features a mezzanine level and a boardroom.

Set to go to auction later this month, listing agent George Petropolous of CRS Property is quoting a guide of more than $1 million.

4. Berserker, Rockhampton

Okay, so it may not be as beautiful or as steeped in history as our other three listings, but this former Uniting Church in the Rockhampton suburb of Berserker still has its own brand of charm.

The building has a price tag of a mere $550,000, through LJ Hooker Rockhampton, with potential for further development to take place on the 1676-square-metre site. It has previously been used as a dance studio.
