Family farms that have been owned for generations

Here are four properties on the market now that will mark the end of an era.

‘Rockview’ has been owned by five generations of the Deasy family and their descendants have been on the land for 140 years, and have never traded the farm outside the family.

Since the 1860s, they’ve farmed sheep, cattle and crops, and the cattle yards and fences are still in place.

On 321.73 hectares, the property is believed to be one of the largest private landholdings in Hunter Valley Wine Country.

It has a development application in place for an eight-lot rural subdivision.

The zoning of the property allows integrated tourism such as accommodation, a resort, restaurants, a hotel, vineyards or a winery in addition to grazing and other agricultural activities.

“While a property of this size is suitable for mixed grazing and agricultural use, including establishment of the largest vineyard in the lower Hunter, it also provides a perfect setting for development of the Hunter Valley’s most prestigious residence,” the listing reads.

Located in Victoria’s Bass Coast Shire, ‘Windana’ has 141.6 hectares across four titles and a three-bedroom brick family homestead built in the 1960s.

Rodwells Ruralco Property’s selling agent Damien Minogue said the property had been held in the Wilson family name for almost 60 years.

“But Jim has recently passed the 80-year milestone and finds that the daily tasks of farming now warrant a decision to sell the farm and retire,” he said.

Jim Wilson operated it as a dairy farm until 2006 when he acquired the property next door and converted the larger farm into a beef cattle breeding and finishing operation.

“This is a productive, picturesque farming country with many established tree lines along the fencing and in the paddocks,” Mr Minogue said.

“There is plenty of further scope for improvements and development and I would value it at circa $6000 to $7000 per acre as a whole.”

Lewis Park, Queensland

Three generations of the same family have grown up at ‘Lewis Park’, about 45 minutes from both Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

On the on 88.31-hectare property are three-architect designed homes, each overlooking dams and with views to Mt Tamborine.  

The listing has flagged the property as a potential land bank for future city expansion and notes it has a 2.4 kilometre frontage to the Albert River.

The vendor has operated Lewis Park as a cattle stud and the sale comes with infrastructure including sheds and cattle yards.

Blackwood Park, NSW

The vendor of Blackwood Park, Robert Landale, says that he will be retiring and with no family succession, he is now offering the property for sale, ending five generations of family ownership.

The crop farm sits on 3416 hectares north-east of Deniliquin in NSW’s Riverina region, with frontage to Forest Creek.
