Iconic Mildura hotel up for sale

An iconic Mildura hotel once associated with the area’s temperance movement and referred to as the ‘Windsor of country Victoria’ is on the market.

The Hotel Mildura Grand, which started life in 1891 as the Mildura Coffee Palace when the town was a planned temperance colony, today stands as a 92-room hotel.

The remaining 20-year leasehold over the 4-star hotel and its thriving conference and functions business is for sale for $2.9 million.

Located in the heart of Mildura’s shopping and dining precinct, opposite the Murray River, the hotel is also home to Mildura’s ‘Feast Street’ eateries, including pioneering regional chef Stefano di Pieri’s famous Stefano’s Restaurant and Stefano’s Café, although these are not included in the deal.

Once referred to as the  ‘Windsor of country Victoria’  – in reference to Melbourne’s 1883 Hotel Windsor, which was originally called The Grand – the hotel is currently delivering an annual net profit of $774,800.

Michelle Mathews of Resort Brokers Australia explained that experienced operators were being sought for the leasehold.

“Given the scale of the accommodation component and its reputation for staging significant business and social events, Hotel Mildura Grand lends itself to operation by a major hotel management group,” Ms Matthews said.

“The long leasehold tenure, with 20 years remaining, the iconic character of the property and its exceptional location in the midst of the buzzing dining and shopping precinct, make it a very attractive proposition for an experienced operator.”

The art-deco style property features an outdoor heated swimming pool and gymnasium with sauna and spa, plus eight function rooms and the Grand Ballroom.

The hotel dates back to the earliest days of the irrigation settlement when it was initially built as a coffee palace to serve the temperance community, but a full liquor licence was eventually granted in 1919 when the Mildura Grand Hotel Limited Company was formed.
