Mantra Group teams up with AFL club to build new Gold Coast hotel

Queensland club Southport Sharks has teamed up with Australian hotel and resort operator Mantra Group to unveil a $25 million hotel, “Mantra at Sharks”, on the Gold Coast.

The 120-room, 209-car space property will be built next to the existing premises in Southport in the Gold Coast health and knowledge precinct, close to the Commonwealth Games village. It will also be marketed as a new venue for business events and weddings.

The hotel is scheduled to be completed in early 2018.

“Mantra at Sharks will provide a market-leading hotel offering, well positioned to become a premier corporate, meetings and leisure hotel, and its opening is well timed to coincide with strong market conditions in the lead-up to and during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games,” Mantra Group chief executive Bob East said.

“The new hotel will complement our existing portfolio of 127 properties across Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Hawaii.”

Queensland construction company McNab and architect GroupGSA will join the development group.

The design of the building will feature the Southport Sharks identity, while the reception and foyer will have a contemporary feel, GroupGSA’s Alex Hoffmann said.

“We are confident in our capability to also tap into sports tourism, combining the hotel with our modern fitness facilities and conference capabilities,” Southport Sharks chief executive Dean Bowtell said.

Mantra Group is Australia’s second-biggest hotel and resort operator.
