Moxy hotel set to land at Sydney Airport

Sydney Airport is set for a new $140 million hotel, with Marriott International to launch its new Moxy brand for the first time in the state and aimed at the “young-at-heart” guest who doesn’t want to be confined to a conventional hotel stay.

Construction has started on the Moxy Sydney Airport, a joint venture between RF Corval and KS Hotels & Resorts. Sydney-based construction company, Roberts Co has been appointed to construct the project.

Designed by MAED. COLLECTIVE and Group GSA, the 2997 square metre hotel is on Baxter Road, located directly alongside Sydney Airport and will feature 301 guest rooms.

RF Corval’s director of hotels, Chris Boys, said it was a landmark project for the company.

Guests will have access to a co-working space and collaborative meeting spaces, which is a hallmark of the Moxy brand. There are five hotels under the fast-growing brand slated to open across the country in the coming years.

Richard Crawford, senior director, Hotel Development Australia, New Zealand and Pacific for Marriott International, said the latest Moxy signing at Sydney Airport is Marriott International’s fifth signing for the brand in Australia and New Zealand, making it one of our fastest growing brands in the region.

“The scale of this project, and its prominent location at the entrance to Sydney Airport, is set to position the hotel as an icon for the Moxy brand in Asia Pacific.

It comes as the hotel sector is under pressure from border closures and lockdown, which has kept occupancy at record lows of about 10 per cent.

But hotel operators say they are confident the market will spring back to life as soon as borders re-open, given the pent-up desire for people to start travelling as soon as possible.

Investor demand has also defied the current conditions, with a series of new developments under way and sales have been strong. Colliers’ hotel team said Australia’s hotel market has kicked up a gear with close to $1.756 billion worth of assets traded to July 2021 in a busy first half and representing over 4500 rooms.

“This project is a clear reflection of our confidence in the accommodation and travel sector. Along with our partners, we share a positive outlook for demand in the longer term, with a forecast recovery of travel and tourism following the opening of borders,” Mr Boys said.

After just four years in operation, the project will expand Roberts Co’s portfolio of projects, which includes North Sydney’s Zurich Tower, the North Shore Health Hub and the $341 million Concord Hospital redevelopment.

Roberts Co’s CEO, Alison Mirams, said the Moxy is going to be a “fun project to work on and even despite the 50 per cent workforce capacity restrictions we are currently working under due to COVID-19, close to 2000 new jobs will be created during the construction phase.”

The Moxy Sydney Airport is slated to open in early 2023.
