Uniting Church selling heritage-listed church in Redfern
Those looking for a miracle investment might want to consider a heritage-listed church on edge of Sydney’s CBD, one of the hottest commercial property markets in the country.
The Uniting Church is selling the Tongan Parish church at 118 Regent Street, Redfern, as the upkeep has become expensive on a building they seldom use.
The Gothic-style church, built in 1872, will go to auction in September with price expectations of between $2.5 and $3 million.
“This Victorian Gothic Church is an extremely unique opportunity within South Sydney, as it’s zoned B4 mixed use, so it will suit savvy owner occupiers, investors and developers,” said selling agent Stephen Grant, from CBRE.
His CBRE colleague Peter Vines said the ”striking architecture and the proximity to the city” made it ”unique”.
“It would be an unbelievable creative office space for the right person,” he said.
The site also had rare ‘place of worship’ rights which was expected to draw interest from other church groups, he said.
In 2013 CBRE sold a former Presbyterian church building onto another church group. The building on Chalmers Street, Surry Hills, had been converted into offices before it was bought by the Indonesian GKY church congregation who refitted it back into a place of worship.
The Regent Street church has Local Heritage listing, meaning that its facade, wooden staircase up to the tower and wooden altar would all have to be maintained as part of new designs.
It also has a striking stained glass window above the front entrance and mezzanine choir loft.
The church is listed as important for its architectural and social significance as a place of worship.
According to the heritage listing it took four years to build and cost £1000, paid for by the congregation.
It has 360 square metres of floor space, two street frontages and is 300 metres from Redfern train station.
