The South Australian Produce Market site is owned by South Australian Produce Market Limited, a public unlisted company. The facility is a diverse cluster of businesses involved in wholesale trading and business service providers focused on providing a marketing and distribution hub for fresh produce and other associated products. The site not only plays a critical role in fresh produce supply but also makes a significant contribution to the State's economy and impacts on local communities and families.
The Market site is situated on 22 hectares* of land in Pooraka, 9kms* north of the Adelaide CBD. It is the primary wholesale market in South Australia. The Market also leases an additional 17ha* of land south of the Market site and 2.6ha* facility to the north. It is open 6 days a week from 8pm to 10am Monday to Friday and 2pm to 9am on Saturday. The prime time of operation is between 12am to 9am Monday to Friday and 5am to 9am on Saturday.
The site holds some 392 leases and licenses primarily with the wholesalers of fresh produce, while others are support businesses to the industry. In addition to the many tenants and licensees on site, a large number of Buyers attend the Market every business day. Each working day, approximately 1,000 people pass through the gates and there are some 16 buildings or other structures on the land to accommodate the people and produce which come into the Market.
