'Bucklands'

Thomas and Elizabeth Henley first occupied "Bucklands' in the early 1870's and apart from farming, Mr Henley and his sons were skilled blacksmiths working on the horse drawn railway line from Goolwa to the Harbours of Port Elliot and Victor.

Boat building, the construction of the Victor Harbor breakwater and jetty were other noted occupations of this pioneering early settler family who first operated the farm situated midway between the townships of Port Elliot and Middleton.

Thomas Henley was also a devout local preacher and raised a family of 9 children at 'Bucklands'.

In the period of some 150 years, 'Bucklands' has been owned and managed as a farm and residence for only 3 families.

Today the homestead retains many of its original features with the addition of wireless NBN and an extension to the kitchen to include a sunny aspect dine with views to the coastline.

The largely stone and brick construction residence comprises 8 main rooms plus a cellar and has in recent years been re roofed and lovingly maintained in an established garden setting.

Upgrades and renovations have been undertaken with sympathy to the original construction and the numerous outbuildings including dairy (now a self contained B&B cottage), shearing shed, hay shed and artesian bore are all fine specimens of this historic rural property.

This prized holding of some 48 acres includes a portion of land that adjoins the Bashams Beach Regional Park located south of the 'Cockle Train' railway line.

The views and panorama of Bashams Beach, Sandy Bay (Fisherman's Bay) and the 'Chicken Run' are absolutely pristine, private and unique.

A corridor of established trees and shrubs between the main road and the coastal reserve creates a safe haven for bird life and fauna.

A winter creek meanders through the pastures and feeds a contoured dam and wetland which brims with local wildlife for 6-9 months of the year.

A herd of cattle grazes the fertile pastures and electric fencing ensures the stock are safe, free to roam the 48 acres.

The artesian bore located in the north west corner of 'Bucklands' supplements the rainwater catchments, dam and mains water available to the homestead.

A small vineyard, cropping, irrigated lucerne pastures and a dairy/sheep herd have also occupied 'Bucklands' over the generations.
