About The Dymocks Building
The Dymocks building is located on George Street midway between King and Market Streets. It is eleven storeys high and of Inter war Commercial Palazzo Style.
It has historic, aesthetic and architectural significance as an excellent and well-preserved example of a multistorey specialist retail arcades built during the 1920's with a focus on the small retail market. It is important for its continuity of occupation by Dymocks since 1890.
It is the best known work of the architect F H B Wilton. It reflects the importance of George Street as a premier retail precinct associated with the formation of the city underground rail service. The building is rare for its use of grey 'granite' terracotta.
The building is the an excellent example of the 1920's Interwar Commercial Palazzo style of architecture. It is a significant component, with Gowings and Grace Brothers, in the 1920's streetscape of George Street. It has potential due to its continued maintenance and sympathetic modification, to retain much of the quality of its original interiors. Dymocks is well known for its continuity as a bookshop since 1890. It is significant as a landmark building.
Interior features include terracotta, decorative terrazzo, silky oak shopfronts and decorative ceiling plaster.
